Self-Discovery Week 4 – Patterns in Stress

When stress hits—who do you become?

Whether you run your own company, work for a large organization with endless demands, or
simply juggle multiple responsibilities, stress can easily become a frequent companion.

A certain amount of pressure can be healthy—it keeps us focused and motivated. But when that
pressure tips over into too much, it can quickly turn into stress.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) defines stress as “the adverse reaction people have to
excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them.

Who Do You Become Under Stress?

  • Anger – Snapping at a coworker over a small mistake, when it’s really the looming
    deadline fueling your frustration.
  • Retreat – Avoiding calls and emails, withdrawing until problems start to pile up.
  • Control – Micromanaging every detail because you’re convinced nothing will be done
“right” unless you do it yourself.
  • Perfectionism – Reworking a presentation for hours, unable to call it finished because
    it’s never quite “good enough.”

Stress is not an illness in itself, but it can significantly affect both physical and mental health.
If Left Unchecked, Stress Can Lead To:

  • Burnout – Physical and emotional exhaustion
  • Anxiety – Persistent feelings of worry, nervousness, or unease that interfere with daily
    activities
  • Depression – A prolonged state of low mood, hopelessness, and loss of interest or
    pleasure in activities once enjoyed

Your Reflection Prompt (remember to journal)
This week, notice your internal patterns when you feel stressed—without judgment.
Ask yourself:

  • What am I feeling right now?
  • What’s my default reaction?
  • How could I respond differently next time?

Recognizing your patterns is the first step toward breaking free from them. And remember—sometimes, a few deep, intentional breaths can change everything.
